Your company policies don’t have to be boring!

Employee handbooks, investigation procedures, company policies…are you yawning yet?

Understandable. All three have a well-earned reputation for being dry as dust.

But they don’t have to be boring. Moreover, they shouldn’t be.

After all, your company policies are the bedrock of your employee experience. They define your company culture, far more than any activities, parties or gym discounts you can offer.

A great set of company policies should be a riveting read. (Seriously.) It shouldn’t feel like lip service or legal cover. It should center your employees as people.

It should also be delivered in a creative format that reflects who you are as an employer.

I’m not saying you need to make your handbook into a Hollywood action movie or a bespoke pop-up book. Bells and whistles are purely optional.

But your delivery method should have an aesthetic that communicates the internal brand of your workplace. It should feel like you.

Not sure what I mean? Valve, Trello and Zaarly give some great examples. And our Company Builders course goes into more detail about how to merge form with content in your employee handbook.

After all, if you hand your employees a black-and-white printout of dry legalese in Times New Roman, that’ll send just as clear a message about how you view them as a punk zine full of pop references and QR codes.

Your company policies provide a HUGE opportunity to set the tone for your workplace. There’s no need for them to be boring. In fact, it’s detrimental to you if they are.
